There are many technical music exercises out there for all instruments and they can be quite helpful in many ways. When I was young, I used to play a lot of exercises to improve my technique. Even to this day, I still do them whenever I can. Focusing on good tone production and good technique is very important. It is more important than focusing on speed, tone and good technique that will be remembered by your body and brain. Furthermore, it will carry over to when you are playing songs.

It’s a good idea to set aside time during ever practice session for these exercises. Usually, somewhere in the beginning of your practice session is best, as you can use these exercises as a warmup. These exercises could involve scalar passages, chord switching, arpeggio patterns and pure symmetrical (mostly for guitar players) patterns that involve a particular technique.

You should practice these technical music exercises with a metronome to help maintain a solid beat and to give you a numerical idea of where you with the exercise. If you are diligent and follow these simple steps you will achieve your desired results much faster.

Good luck and have fun!
